The formula, explained

Estimated wait time is the number of people ahead of you, divided by the number of staff serving the same line (rounded up), multiplied by the average time each service takes:

wait ≈ ⌈people ahead ÷ staff serving⌉ × average service time

A barbershop with 6 people waiting, 2 barbers, and 20-minute cuts is quoting its next walk-in roughly a 60-minute wait: each barber has 3 cuts to finish first. The same 6-person line at a single-pharmacist counter with 5-minute pickups is only a 30-minute wait — queue length alone tells a customer very little, which is why “how many ahead” is a worse answer than an actual time estimate.

How do you calculate average wait time in a queue?

Multiply the number of people ahead by the average service time per customer, then divide by how many staff are serving the same line, rounding the queue split up. For example, 6 people ahead at 15 minutes each with 2 staff gives an estimated wait of about 45 minutes.

What is a good average wait time?

It depends on the service: quick-service businesses like pharmacies aim for under 15 minutes, walk-in clinics commonly run 30 to 60 minutes, and anything over an hour sharply increases walkaways. The bigger lever is perceived wait — customers who can see their live position and leave the waiting room tolerate far longer queues.

Why does my real wait time differ from the calculation?

The simple formula assumes every service takes the average time and every staff member is always serving. Real queues have no-shows, variable service lengths, breaks, and appointments mixed with walk-ins.
